Common Types of Pain

Pets can fall victim to pain in many of the same ways as humans.  An injury or infection may be obvious, but others may be tougher to see.

  • Arthritis
  • Slipped disc
  • Bone cancer
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Degenerative bone disease
  • Stiff joints
  • Tooth and oral problems
  • Ear infections

How to Tell If Your Pet Is In Pain

Dogs and cats often hide pain.  They do that as a protective mechanism.  In the wild, pain was a sign of weakness which made them vulnerable to predators.  Therefore, it may be difficult to always know whether your pet is feeling pain.

Look for behavioral changes that may indicate something’s not quite right.  One sign might be excessive vocalization.  You dog may whine or whimper, growl, or snarl at you.  Your cat may purr or meow more than normal. Both dogs and cats can over-groom a pain spot.  Dogs will often lick their paws to sooth themselves.

A sudden change in moving, sleeping, or eating patterns also can be a sign.  They may limit their movements or have a loss of appetite.  Your cat may hide from you or sit still in a “hunched up” manner.  If you notice them sitting or lying in an unusual position, or seem overly restless, this may also be a symptom.  Just like humans, they may have trouble getting comfortable.  You may also experience your cat defecating outside the litter box, or your dog suddenly urinating indoors. Even loving, docile animals may become aggressive when they are hurting.  They may lash out, or bite, to prevent you from getting close to the source of the pain.

How Pain Is Treated

If you see these types of behavior, a trip to the vet is in order.  We can help diagnose the source of the pain or illness and come up with a treatment plan.  The first step may be to help ease the pain while developing a treatment for the underlying cause.  Pain management may include prescription medications, topical treatments, emergency treatments, and surgery if necessary.

Why Choose Our Veterinarian for Your Pet’s Pain Management

Our team has decades of experience of working with pets.  In addition, we have in-house lab testing, and conduct diagnostic image techniques (including radiology).  If necessary, we can perform surgical procedures including joint reconstruction, dental surgery, internal surgery, tumor removal, and more.

My family has always taken all of our dogs here, and we've always been extremely pleased! All of the doctors are always super helpful, as well as the nurses and receptionists. One of my dogs was extremely sick with Parvo, and he wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for their expertise. They even called to check on him multiple times, which I thought was super sweet! I wouldn't take my dogs anywhere else in town for veterinary care.
