Pet Surgery FAQs Answered by Your Wichita Falls Veterinarians

Pet surgery can be a confusing proposition -- unless, of course, you're bringing your pet to Callfield Companion Animal Clinic. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about pet surgery and answers from your Wichita Falls veterinarians, Dr. Elisa Spears or Dr. James Spears.

1. What kinds of surgery do you perform?

We provide a wide range of surgical procedures, including dental surgery, orthopedic surgery, exploratory surgery, tumor removal for biopsy, spay/neuter surgery, and emergency surgery.

2. What conditions call for emergency surgery?

Emergency surgery may be necessary to treat situations such as gastric dilatation volvolus ("bloat"),  difficult labor (which might necessitate a C-section), removal or urinary stones or digestive blockages, removal of internal/external foreign objects, wound sealing, and fracture repair.

3. Why is spay and neuter surgery so important?

Spay and neuter surgery may be preventative procedures, but that doesn't make them any less critical. Sexual sterilization remove your pet's risk for potentially-deadly reproductive cancers. It also makes your pet less likely to be driven to dangerous behaviors such as night roaming.

4. How old does my pet need to be for spay or neuter surgery?

A puppy or kitten as young as 8 weeks of age may receive spay or neuter surgery. Performing the surgery at this young age ensures that your puppy or kitten can receive the maximumprotective benefits.

5. Should I be worried about the use of anesthesia on my dog or cat?

Anesthesia is actually very helpful for your dog or ct during surgery, not only to eliminate discomfort but also to keep him still throughout the procedure. While anesthesia always carries some risk, our skilled team uses it with great expertise and caution.

6. How should I prepare my pet for surgery?

A veterinary exam will help us evaluate your pet's health and anesthesia tolerance in advance. It's best to withhold food for most pets after the usual dinnertime the night before surgery. We will advise you on whether you administer any routine medications beforehand.

7. Will my pet need medications after surgery?

It's normal to prescribe certain medications following surgery. These medications may include painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and/or antibiotics.

8. What kinds of tips and instructions will I receive regarding post-operative care?

We will teach you how to change wound dressings, how to evaluate the incision for signs of infection, and how to keep your dog or cat from re-opening the incision during recovery.

Testimonial

My family has always taken all of our dogs here, and we've always been extremely pleased! All of the doctors are always super helpful, as well as the nurses and receptionists. One of my dogs was extremely sick with Parvo, and he wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for their expertise. They even called to check on him multiple times, which I thought was super sweet! I wouldn't take my dogs anywhere else in town for veterinary care.
